Get engaged this fall, and get to know your WRA endorsed candidates
October 13th, 2010The general election is less than three weeks away, and the outcome will have a direct affect on your business and the choices you make in your everyday life. This midterm election is not one to sit out, even for those who claim to be “apolitcal” or merely apathetic about our political system.
You absolutely need to know which candidates are going to negatively affect your livelihood and lifestyle, and it is important to learn about and consider voting for candidates endorsed by your state trade association, the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association. A lot of time is spent researching an incumbant’s voting record and even more time is spent compiling data about those challenging the incumbants.
For those of you who just go through the motions and draw the lines for the same party or candidates that you have always supported just because it’s a family tradition, your significant other told you to do so, or someone at work “filled you in,” you may want to reconsider and actually take the time to research the candidates on your own. Almost all candidates have their own Web site and Facebook fan page. It easy to track them down and find out where they stand on issues important to you.
The WRA government/public affairs staff along with LARA leadership invited all 32nd Assembly District candidates to interview for a possible WRA endorsement last summer. All the candidates participated except for the two independents, Dan Kilkenny and Rick Pappas. They declined the invitation. After interviewing the candidates and discussing their responses about important property rights and quality of life issues, it was determined that Tyler August was the best candidate for our issues. If you still have money in your Direct Giver account, you may want to consider August or at least learn more about him on his Web site, www.TylerAugust.com.
Republican Scott Walker, a Delavan native, was recently endorsed by the WRA. Check out www.scottwalker.org. Walker is a true conservative candidate who wants government to get out of the way of business owners.
Lastly, consider WRA endorsed J. B. Van Hollen for Attorney General. He is vying for his second term. Van Hollen is up against Scott Hassett, former Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources during Doyle’s first term. He was also a trial attorney for 22 years. Van Hollen comes from a long line of Realtors®. His family owned and operated a brokerage in Northern Wisconsin for years. He understands private property rights and the importance of safe neighborhoods. Check out www.vanhollenforag.com.
Participating in politics is not just voting. It also includes things like lobbying, protesting a local ordinance that seems completely unreasonable, getting involved in state or local committees, and simply encouraging other people to vote, get involved and pay attention. If you have just raised questions about your local community, state, or society in general, then whether you know it or not, you have political concerns of some kind of proportion. A simple act of acknowledging an issue that is important to you is indeed a political act.
I encourage all of you to be engaged this fall and participate in politics. Know the general facts about the candidates and issues before you vote, and please think about the importance of private property rights and quality of life issues for you, your customers and clients, and your family.
